After inserting the CD-ROM into the computer, the home screen should appear:

Alcoholism

By clicking "Welcome," a screen showing a brief set of instructions will appear. The use of the program is very intuitive so a manual is not necessary. Navigation is easy. The Welcome screen is shown here:

Alcoholism

Select a patient case. These cases are carefully designed to capture a specific type of alcoholic patient. A brief description or scenario is provided to explain the issues and the video is used to draw the user into that patient context. The patient selection menu is shown here:

Alcoholism

This demonstration will use the generic patient. About 35% of the content is presented through this patient type.

Alcoholism

After reading the synopsis, the video is played by clicking on the thumbnail graphic.

Alcoholism

When the video is completed, the user then accesses the content material. For each disciplinary section (pharmacology, behavioral issues, etc.) there are three tiers of information possible. The first is a display of the "primary" points of subject matter. The pharmacology material for the generic patient is shown here.

Alcoholism

Some bulleted points may have a subordinate text/graphic hyperlink for the expansion of additional information. These may be accessed by either the blue arrow to the left of the text or by clicking directly on the word string. In this case, we are seeking additional information on hepatic metabolism, shown here.

Alcoholism

In this expanded body of information, there is additional supporting material provided. This is accessed by clicking on the blue arrow or the text string. In this example, we will show information on acetaminophen metabolism, shown here.

Alcoholism

Navigation to the superior levels is done by the reverse arrows. For each patient case, corresponding content material is provided. At the completion of any section, a self-evaluation quiz is available.

Alcoholism

Correct answers are provided for each question. A "REVIEW" option returns to the part of the program that showed the original material.

There are also Web links to additional resource material embedded within these content screens. These addresses are kept current on our own web site. The CD-ROM program automatically links to our home server to translate any address that may have changed into the current ones. In the future, we plan to have additional resource material on this site.
