Stephen Downing, Ph.D
Steve has been fascinated by the intricate and unique architecture of cells and tissues ever since he first studied them in a college histology class. During his 30 years of teaching and research in cell biology he has developed an ever-growing appreciation of this microscopic part of our world and has been capturing its beauty in photomicrographs for many years. From the thread cell found in the slime glands of the skin of the hagfish that looks like a ball of yarn, to the lining of the colon that resembles a bouquet of flowers, Steve presents us with an extraordinary approach to viewing cellular structure. He has taken over 10,000 photomicrographs of normal human tissues through the microscope and this library of images forms the basis of the HistoArt™ imagery. Steve has received numerous honors and awards through his career as a researcher and teacher, including:
Federal Research Grants
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Numerous Scientific Publications in Refereed Journals
Science
Journal of Cell Biology
Photomicrography Honors
